Making PCH safer

Thank you to the local Caltrans workers. An evident fact is that Pacific Coast Highway is a very busy highway subject to many situations impacting flow and safety.

As there are state budget restrictions, a cost effective, intelligent approach to enhance safety is a worthwhile objective. In addition to the vehicles and safety of their passengers, as we live in a beautiful, recreational rich environment, there are pedestrians and bicyclists to help protect.

Caltrans has recently been involved in improving many shoulder areas. Shoulder areas which are free of debris, wider and which have smooth surfaces, add greatly to driver, bicycle and pedestrian safety. In addition, clearing brush off the shoulder provides a wider visibility area and an enhanced firebreak zone.

Enhanced drainage features, currently being worked on near Zuma Beach, help reduce highway flooding and contamination into our ocean. Shoulder work, center dividing paddles, improved signage, including new and additional speed limit signs and modifications implemented at Zuma, enhanced road stenciling, a recent hazardous surface repair at the east end of Malibu, all improve safety and are appreciated.

Many times roadwork is done at night to minimize traffic inconvenience. Sometimes this may not be possible, so please be kind to crews. Their efforts benefit us all.

So, to Caltrans, Malibu City Council and staff, and all individuals and groups helping to make PCH safer for visitors and residents, thank you.
