The  Malibu High School girls varsity basketball team traveled to Costa Mesa High School last week to win their first CIF playoff game in several years.

The Sharks defeated the Mustangs 58 – 57 after MHS junior center Sierra Zontelli scored the game-winning shot with four seconds left on the clock. Zontelli scored a season high 21 points and 11 rebounds.

The Sharks’ leading scorer for the year, co-captain Danielle Bush, made four three-point shots, scored 14 points and intercepted five passes to keep Malibu in the game. Freshmen twins Marie and Helena Vazelakis scored 10 of their 16 point total in the second half.

“The girls’ determination and persistence simply accounted for this win, and Sierra’s tenacious play under the baskets enabled her to make that winning shot,” Malibu head coach Andy Meyer said in a press release. “It sure was exciting!”

The Sharks’ second tournament game has not yet been announced.
