Two lifeguards became stranded Saturday while attempting to rescue a rock climber stuck on a cliff at Pirates Cove, just east of Westward Beach in Malibu. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue team responded to the scene at 4:15 p.m. and rescued the climber and lifeguards.

The female climber, who was shoeless and in a bathing suit, became stranded on a cliff side about 50 feet above the rocks below. She was spotted by lifeguards in a nearby ocean rescue boat, who then climbed up to help her but got stuck on the cliff as well.

The Malibu Search and Rescue Team and Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded and a rescue team member was lowered down the side of the cliff. The team member harnessed the two lifeguards and lowered them to safety. By the time emergency responders arrived, the woman had been rescued by nearby climbers. The lifeguards and the woman were unhurt.

This is the second rescue in the same location this year.
