After two years as head coach of the Malibu High varsity boys soccer team, administrators chose not to renew coach Lloyd Kinnear’s contract, athletic director Chris Neier confirmed.
When asked if Kinnear’s departure was amicable, Neier said he could not comment.
Kinnear said he was not given a reason for why he was let go.
“They didn’t give me a reason and they told me they don’t have to give me a reason,” Kinnear said.
Neier said he hopes to name a new head coach by the end of the school year.
During Kinnear’s tenure, the Sharks went 21-7-3 overall, finishing in 2nd place in the Tri-Valley League this past season, and in fourth place in 2011-2012.
The team made the CIF playoffs each season but was knocked out in the first round both years.
Before taking the helm for the boys squad, Kinnear spent two years as an assistant on the varsity girls soccer team and one year as an assistant on the boys squad. Kinnear said he’s been hired to coach for a local semi-pro league and despite being let go, he’s happy with his accomplishments at the school.
“[Coaching at Malibu High] was a great opportunity, great experience,” Kinnear said. “It’s great that I’m leaving on a high.”
