Local residents and business people gathered at Duke’s restaurant last month for the Safety Harbor Kids third annual Spirit of Goodwill holiday party, which honored 80 orphans and homeless children within 50 miles of Malibu. Safety Harbor Kids is a charity that aims to help orphans and homeless children in the areas of college, career and the arts.

The children arrived from various homeless shelters and received encouragement from Malibu locals, inspiring them to follow their dreams.

Following a motivational talk, children were entertained by the Safety Harbor Travellin’ Band, which was led by Ed Roth and Kenny Aronoff on drums. Children then received music lessons from the band members.

In addition to music, there was art by local Susan DeMarco, a Santa’s workshop for the children to build toys, goal development by the Rainmaker Foundation, journal writing by John Bernstein, and tree decorating and cookie-making. Additionally, each child was presented with a stuffed stocking from Santa.

After the Safety Harbor Kids enrichment activities, the children were treated to a holiday meal catered by Duke’s Malibu, and presented with presents provided by a Malibu High School toy drive and donations from HBO’s “Big Love.”
