On April 14, Girl Scout Troop 1055 from Webster Elementary held a beach cleanup at Surfrider Beach.
According to Troop Leader Kym Shafai, the girls heard about the “recent plight of the sea lions” and wanted to pitch in to help their habitat.
“My daughter had recently read an article in The Malibu Times about the sea lion pups and the California Wildlife Center and told me that she wanted to use some of her own money to make a donation,” Shafai said in an email, adding, “another girl from our troop lives on the beach and had been witnessing all of the pups coming ashore and the CWC coming to their aid. All of the girls are huge animal lovers so I thought that this would be a perfect cause for them to pursue.”
The Girl Scouts visited the CWC to give their donation earlier in April.
Shafai went on to say the troop of Webster Elementary 5th graders — which also includes a home schooled girl — decided a beach cleanup would be a good addition to their work with the CWC.
“As an extension of donating to the CWC, the girls wanted to do a beach clean up day to help sea life and the environment,” Shafai wrote.
And, according to Shafai, the girls are far from finished with their environmental activism.
“The girls want to do another beach clean up day but are hoping to possibly expand it by encouraging their fellow students to come out and help,” Shafai wrote. “They also plan to organize a collection of ‘Wish List’ items for the CWC at Webster.”
