Malibu’s Only Local Daily News … from Radio Malibu  …. F-M 99 point 1 K B U U. Good morning … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

——

The annual homeless census figure have been released for Malibu.

65 persons were found on Malibu beaches … in cars … or in canyons.

22 homeless people in the Civic Center and Surfrider Beach area …

7 further east … at Tuna Beach.

Another 40 or so scattered west … with a small concentration in cars at Zuma Beach.

But city officials say there is a problem with the data … it shows results from a different Malibu geographic area than in years past.

Revised figures will be released soon.

Private crews have installed the new traffic light for the Malibu Beach Inn. And Nobu has submitted a new parking plan.  Details: https://www.radiomalibu.net/private-signal-on-public-street/

If there was any doubt as to who is responsible for the anonymous letters arriving in Malibu mailboxes … the suspense is over.

Secretary of State’s office show that the group called “Together For Dwelling Size Fairness” was incorporated lst month by Don Schmitz.

His firm … Schmitz and Associates … handles dozens of development projects before Malibu’s city council.

Schmitz is a regular figure at Planning Commission and city council meetings.

And he is outspoken against the move by the Malibu city council to ban mansionization.

The city staff is currently writing a proposed ordinance that would ban huge houses … if they comply with setback and size rules but dwarf neighboring houses.

The rules as envisioned by the city council would not affect most of the houses in Malibu … and they certainly would not affect houses being rebuilt after a fire.

That is contrary to the assertions made in Schmitz’s anonymous letter.

The proposed ordinance will be released for public comment … possibly as early as this week.

It goes up for discussion July First … at the Planning Commission.

Then it goes to the city council … sometime after summer vacation.

Just in time for the peak summer beach season … Metro is taking the Expo Line out of service.

At least … the last two stops of it.

Metro is ending the line just short of Staples Center and downtown for the next two months.

The train that some Malibu residents use … to get to downtown Los Angeles … will see its last two stops closed for two months … starting Saturday.

Metro is using the two month window to replace the track in Downtown Los Angeles … particularly the rail junction shared by the Expo Line and Blue Line.

That simple junction has been a continuing source of problems for Metro.

Opening of the Expo Line was delayed nearly a half year … while Metro engineers tried to figure out how to make the curved track switch work .

——

Malibu has in the past been a hotbed of opposition to measles vaccine.

And now … a proposed state law change would crack down on doctors and clinincs that write large numbers of medical exemptions for vaccinations.

That law was significantly weakened yesterday … as even the governor stepped back from a proposal to havestate health officials review individual cases.

A legislative compromise was announced Tuesday.

The updated measure removes a provision that would have required health officials to consider every exemption requested.

The California bill is aimed at deterring “doctor-shopping.”

Proponents said some doctors have been selling immunization exemptions since California ended non-medical exemptions in 2016.

——

The northern California utility blamed for igniting several wildfires that killed dozens and destroyed thousands of homes … has agreed to pay $1 billion to local governments.

Attorneys representing 14 local public entities announced the settlement with Pacific Gas & Electric on Tuesday to cover “taxpayer losses.”

The fires include the 2015 fire in Butte County … the series of 2017 fires in Northern California wine country … and the 2018 fire that destroyed the town of Paradise and killed 85 people.

This is important for Malibu.

Malibu has sued Southern California Edison … the city has spent at least six million dollars

PG&E Corp. filed for bankruptcy earlier this year citing billions of dollars in expected losses, mostly from lawsuits filed by individual fire victims, businesses and insurance companies. A judge overseeing that case must approve the settlement announced Tuesday.
