On behalf of the entire board of the Malibu Film Society, we want to thank everyone who was able to join us for our very first screening on Sunday, July 19. We had a great turnout for “Some Like It Hot,” and we want to extend a special thanks to Dick Guttman for sharing his personal stories about the making of the film and his long association with director Billy Wilder.

We’re also very excited about our first-ever fundraising gala on August 15, a tribute to the legendary Stan Winston. Stan’s work spanned an amazing array of unforgettable movies, ranging from “Roots“ and “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” to “Aliens,” “The Terminator,” “Jurassic Park,” and “Iron Man” with “Austin Powers 2” and “Edward Scissorhands““ thrown in for good measure! Our featured speaker for the Winston tribute will be another Malibu local, James Cameron, producer, writer and director, who first collaborated with Stan to bring “The Terminator” to life 25 years ago.

Tickets to this event are $40 per person, $75 per couple when purchased in advance, $50 per person on the day of the show. While MFS is an all-volunteer effort, the admission price is critical to securing the long-term funding needed to help cover our expenses through this first year of operations, and includes a tax-deductible donation of $35 per person, $65 per couple for advance purchase, $45 per person day of show.

Our vision for MFS is to have our members involved as much as possible. There are several committees which would welcome member involvement on everything from revenue and operations to film programming and studio relations. We also welcome member feedback on how we can improve the overall screening experience, as well as suggestions on film programming.

Again, we really appreciate everyone’s support and welcome the community to attend our future screenings. And don’t forget to save the date: August 15 for the Stan Winston tribute, featuring James Cameron!
