As a Malibu resident living near the latest tragic fires, I found the last week has been truly frightening. Observing the power of the fires, especially when fueled by the winds, it seemed that even with the help of the heroic Fire Department, destiny might not be in my favor. My heart goes out to our unfortunate neighbors who lost their homes and possessions.
I am writing to publicly thank our Fire Department for their tireless efforts to contain the blaze. And I offer my personal gratitude to two angels who appeared at my door to help me in this time of despair. Rabbi Levi Cunin and Rabbi Mordechai Nemtzov from Chabad of Malibu showed up just as the lights in my house and neighborhood went out. They offered any kind of assistance. Their unconditional offer of love and support during the crisis brought a feeling of safety to my heart and a tear to my eyes as they lit candles and flashlights.
I feel it’s important for me to share with your readers, my neighbors, about these bearded men, these two angels from Chabad. They may seem to be more involved with their religious practice than the more practical things in life, but that night I realized that these people’s lives transcend religious differences and is expressed in their absolute love for all of humanity. So, thank you , Rabbi Cunin and Rabbi Nemtzov. You demonstrated a virtue that all citizens in this city can learn from.
