This is Malibu’s only local daily news.

It’s the Thursday news … from Radio Malibu  …. 97 point 5 K B U.

Good morning Malibu!

——

We do not like to report rumors.

And we do not believe this rumor … to be true.

But Malibu and all of California was swept by rumors this week … of immigration raids and roundups.

Employees in Malibu are terrified.

There were rumors of federal raids planned for the route 5-34 buses.

Rumors of a roundup of people at the bus stop .. where day workers hang out.

Malibu residents have been calling the radio station … asking if the rumors are true.

This is a statewide issue … such rumors are reported by newspapers in San Diego … San Francisco … up and down California.

The Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officials are saying their operational plans have -NOT- changed.

But … there was a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation last week that resulted in 161 arrests in six Southern California counties.

Most of them were convicted felons …. and ICE says this was business as usual.

But the panic has spread.

Consul generals of Mexico and Guatemala are telling their citizens …. be prepared and do not panic.

But they are saying … in today’s immigration landscape … this means preparing for potential deportation.

Malibu … Los Angeles … and all of the country …. is on edge.

Workers .. terrified.

Children ….  … can you imagine?

Employers … sympathetic and very worried.

For now … the rumors seem to be unfounded.

For now.

Rain is coming.

Lots of rain.

There’s a flash flood watch up for Malibu.

5 to 10 inches of rain total … falling maybe at rates up to one inch per hour tomorrow.

There are three storms lined up … one tomorrow … one Monday … and maybe a third one next Wednesday or Thursday.

And tomorrow’s may be the biggest rainmaker of the winter … with five to ten inches possible here in Malibu.

Five to ten inches.

Rain will develop over Santa Barbara around noon today … and into Ventura and Los Angeles Counties by late this afternoon and evening.

Moderate to heavy rain will develop over us through tomorrow..

Thunderstorms cannot be ruled out.

Moderate to heavy rain is expected to continue across the region into tomorrow night as the storm system moves slowly inland.

The National Weather Service says this looks to be the strongest storm to hit the Southern California coast this season.

It is likely the biggest rainmaker within the last six years … and maybe even as far back as the December 2004 or January 1995 floods.

Rainfall amounts are forecast to be between 2-6 inches for the L-A  flatlands … but up to 5-10 inches for the south-facing coastal mountain slopes.

And … big winds out of the south,

Winds will increase dramatically tomorrow … 45 miles an hour on the coast … gusts up to 60 to 70 miles an hour likely over the higher of the Los Angeles and Ventura County mountains.

Rough weather this winter has taken a toll on California’s vast network of roads and highways, and state officials calculated the cost Wednesday at $401 million.

——

In addition to the flash flood watch that goes up tonight … the National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory from seven tonight through seven Sunday morning.

An extended period of high surf … combined with very large and choppy Wind surf … are expected to hit the coast this weekend.

Surf we’ll be coming from the west at six to nine feet today … building to 8 to 13 feet on Saturday.

There is a possibility of surf and win chop to combine to cause damage Saturday.

——-

Five people were hurt  … and two of them had critical injuries … in a five-vehicle crash last night on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.

Three of the lanes were closed for nearly two hours.

No word on what caused the crash … but four fire trucks and a medical helicopter were summoned and traffic was snarled for hours.

The crash was reported at 8:19 p.m. on the northbound side of the highway near Carbon Canyon Road … according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Two people were airlifted from the scene and the others were taken to hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The investigation continues and it has not been revealed what happened last night …. or of restaurant traffic was involved.

Last night’s crash was one of several closures and crashes on P C H yesterday.

There was also a crash midday on P C H in Pacific Palisades … which closed the road for two hours.

The committee that is negotiating a school district divorce between Malibu and Santa Monica has a meeting tonight … and it may be the last one.

An agreement on financial matters has been nearly finalized … negotiator and city council member Laura Rosenthal says it’s just a matter of crossing tees and dotting eyes.

The committee was set up by the two cities … to come up with a complicated financial analysis and plan for setting up a separate Malibu school district.

Complicated State education finance formulas … involving property taxes … state aid for children with special needs … and the complicated California budget .. all come into play.

The negotiations nearly went off track a year ago …. when one of the Malibu panel members filed an unrelated lawsuit against the Santa Monica City government in an unrelated issue.

But that member was replaced … and the six members now have come up with a blueprint to divide property and make sure that no student in either city is put to a disadvantage when the parents divorce.

If approved by the school board … Malibu voters Will have to approve not only the creation of a new school district … but also continuation of the parcel tax that is already in effect in both cities.

The tax would not go up … but Malibu residents have usually opposed the tax levy … but have been overridden by the majority vote from Santa Monica.

Net result …. even though activists … the school board … and the city councils all overwhelmingly support separating Malibu and Santa Monica … the final decision rests with Malibu voters …

And it will be a hard sell to a voting populace that generally has not supported School District bond issues and parcel taxes … at the 55 percent

supermajority level needed under state law to approve them.

——

The Malibu High School’s varsity boys soccer team … meanwhile … has placed first in the Frontier League with just one loss and one tie … and 10 victories in season league play.

The Sharks had the highest scoring offense i nt he league with 49 goals scored in league play.

Tonight at 5 at Malibu High …. the boys will enter the first round of the C-I-F tournament … hosting Brentwood.

This game will be played under the lights …. which will be turned off by 8 … and it’s worth noting that the game would have to be played on the away field if the lights were not available.
