Pena Canyon Fire

Firefighters rushed to extinguish a small spot fire that broke out Saturday afternoon in a remote canyon of eastern Malibu.

The fire was reported around 4 p.m. in an area known as Pena Canyon located off of Pacific Coast Highway south of Big Rock Drive, according to Battalion Chief Williams of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Flames were doused with a helicopter because of the fire’s remote location, Williams said.

We had two [ground] patrols that were able to get up there, but they still had to hike in 300 yards,” he said.

The spot measured 2 x 5 feet, he estimated, and a cause has not been determined.
