Center in the clear

In response to Bob Purvey’s letter entitled, “Stop Foolin’ on the Septics,” which states that the Cross Creek Shopping Center continues to pollute the waters in the Civic Center area, the record shows that the contrary is true.

The Cross Creek Shopping Center wastewater treatment plant produces treated water far cleaner than required with 98 percent nitrogen removal and complete disinfection. Effluent total nitrogen has averaged 2.39 mg/l for the past 11 months, versus the permit limit of 10 mg/l. The effluent has bacterial and contaminant levels below detection limits and is better than the treatment levels at the most sophisticated centralized wastewater treatment plant. The treatment plant currently discharges <3 percent of the USEPA TMDL maximum nitrogen discharges to restore the quality of the Malibu Lagoon, which is similar to the nitrogen contribution of the 1-2 house using conventional septic systems.

The effluent date is routinely submitted to the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board and is available for public review.
