Local residents and businesses are invited to join a worldwide movement, the Great ShakeOut, to practice earthquake preparedness. Southern California residents can join in by participating in an earthquake drill on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 10:18 a.m.
Malibu residents may head over to City Hall, where City of Malibu Public Safety Manager Susan Dueñas will be on hand to explain the drill and offer tips on earthquake preparedness. At 10:18 a.m., those at City Hall will follow the steps—“drop, cover and hold on”—for one minute, followed by an evacuation drill.
According to ShakeOut, people can reduce the chance of injury by following drop, cover and hold on. Here is an outline from the organization’s website:
* Drop where you are, onto your hands and knees. This position protects you from being knocked down and also allows you to stay low and crawl to shelter if nearby.
* Cover your head and neck with one arm and hand.
* Hold on until shaking stops.

According to its website, California has more than 9.81 million people/organizations registered to participate in the Thursday drill. Southern California alone has 4.5 million registered as of Tuesday night, Oct. 16.
