[Update, 3:55 p.m.] Traffic lanes on Malibu Canyon Road have been fully reopened.

A car accident Tuesday afternoon in the tunnel on Malibu Canyon Road on forced the California Highway Patrol to shut down southbound lanes at the tunnel, CHP officials said.

An ambulance was called to the scene to treat an unspecified number of injuries, Officer Tatiana Sauquillo said. CHP first received a call about the crash at 2:34 p.m., and a SigAlert about the lane closure was issued at 2:58 p.m. Sauquillo did not yet know how many vehicles were involved or the circumstances of the accident.

According to locals stuck on the road, traffic was bumper-to-bumper going both directions on Malibu Canyon Road.

Sauquillo said the SigAlert would be over by 3:30 p.m.

“They’re probably just waiting for a tow truck to come in at this point,” she said.
