Surfing pioneer Dale Velzy died May 26 from lung cancer at the Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo. He was 77.

In the 1960s, Velzy was the world’s largest surfboard manufacturer. He operated five shops and two factories that sold as many as 200 custom-built boards a week, according to the Associated Press. Velzy built boards for many famous surfers.

Velzy had many friends among the surfing community in Malibu. He appeared last year with several surf legends at the grand opening of Malibu Shirts.

A memorial service took place for Velzy on Tuesday.
