Obituary: Charles Edward Keenan, Jr.

Dr. Charles Edward Keenan, Jr. passed away due to cancer at his Malibu residence on July 19. He was 82. 

Born May 21, 1933 to Charles and Margaret Keenan in St. Paul, Minn., Keenan Jr. joined the U.S. Marines during the Korean War at the age of 17 and was shipped to Camp Pendleton in San Diego County. 

Upon graduation from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in 1960, he moved to California, joined and established a thriving medical practice in Santa Monica. Keenan Jr. was chief of staff at Santa Monica Hospital and president of the Los Angeles County Medical Association Bay District in 1977, chairman of its Board of Ethics between 1982-86, medical director for Santa Monica City College, and associate clinical professor for UCLA before retiring in 2004.

Keenan Jr. married Patricia Lee Chauncey and moved their family to Malibu in 1968, raising seven children. He is survived by children Jeffery, Joseph, Suzanne, Chip and Timothy; grandchildren Summer, George, Taylor, Shawna, Brittany, Chadney, Navarre, Sky, Christopher, Charlotte, Violet and Vivienne; siblings Mary Margaret, John, Michael, Richard, Joseph and Patrick; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A mass will take place on Saturday, Aug. 1 at 10 a.m. at St. Monica Church in Santa Monica. A memorial service will take place on Sunday, Aug. 2, at 4 p.m. at the Malibu West Beach Club. Donations on his behalf should be sent to the Cancer Research Institute.
