A Malibu veterinarian is making plans to head to Houston … to treat injured pets in the midst of Hurricane Harvey.

The Broad Beach Sand replacement takes another strange turn.

Two more mountain lion kittens found in the mountains above Malibu … but this may be good news / bad news.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news.

It’s the   ((((  Wednesday  ))) edition from Radio Malibu  …. 97 point 5 K B U.

Good morning Malibu Bunnie Lane!

——

A Malibu veterinarian is packing medical supplies … and plans to fly to Houston tomorrow with medicine and supplies for animals injured by the massive hurricane that has dumped 50 inches of rain.

Doctor Lisa Newell is awaiting clearance from Texas authorities to make the trip … with a team of vets.

She hopes to fly out Thursday and return Saturday night.

Doctor Lisa … as she is known … is trying to raise some funds for the logistics and some supplies for the sick and injured animals.

Anything that may be left over … she will donate to the local grassroots organizations, who are on the frontlines.

A link to Doctor post is on the KBU Newswire.

The story of the Broad Beach sand replacement project is taking yet another strange turn. Former California Coastal Commissioner Sara Wan of Malibu is now working on behalf of a Canadian company  … which wants to supply sand for replenishing the beach.

And this puts her on the same side as the Broad Beach homeowners … who are also asking for the Canadian sand.

As you may recall … Broad Beach is paying to rebuild its beach … and the current plan is to bring in 22 thousand truckloads of sand from Ventura County.

That’s 22 thousand trucks driven down Pacific Coast Highway … int he first year alone.

The Broad Beach homeowners would rather use barges to bring down the sand from a hige mine in Canada … on Vancouver Island.

The Coastal Commission is blocking that … they say the Canadian sand is gray … not white.

Sara Wan says the Canadian sand is a better idea… and she went to the Malibu City council this week to ask for its support.

SARA WAN QQQQ: trucking process is enormous.

“We feel that our sand … which is river sand  …and therefore is very very close (it was buried actually) to what you find on a beach … rather than sand that is pulverized from the mountaijn   can be barged down and really have no … or very few…  impacts  …as opposed to the trucking … and the trucking process (impact) is enormous.’ END QUOTE]

Unless the Coastal Commission changes its mind … the trucks are supposed to start rolling this August.

The strange turn is this … and it may be some inside politics.

Sara Wan is known as a staunch environmentalist and coastal advocate.

She is now on the same side as developer Don ScHmitz … who stood next to her Monday night at city hall to campaign for the barges of sand.

That is an alliance no one ever … ever expected to see,

The discovery of two cute mountain lion kittens born in the mountains above Malibu is bittersweet.

National Park Service researchers say the babies … a female and her brother … are named P-59 and P-60.

They were found by biologists earlier this month in the central portion of the range … that would be roughly in the Mulholland Highway area near Kanan Dume Road.

The geographic isolation of these mountains is causing a serious inbreeding problem.

The father is suspected to be P-12.

If testing confirms that … it means P-12 is the kittens’ father … grandfather, their great grandfather, and their great-great grandfather.

Jeff Sikich … a park service biologist … says  “Inbreeding to this degree really highlights the need for providing safe passage across the 101 freeway so new mountain lions can enter the population and breed.”

Liberty Canyon in Agoura Hills has been identified as the ideal spot for a wildlife crossing. Caltrans is currently drawing up a proposal, and fundraising efforts via SaveLACougars.com are underway with the National Wildlife Federation and Santa Monica Mountains Fund.

A study co-authored last year with researchers at UCLA found that without increased connectivity, especially for animals moving in from the north, this would lead to the continued erosion of genetic diversity and increase the chances of extinction of the mountain range’s population.

Reaction is coming in to the sudden death of Malibu resident David Torrence … an Olympic middle distance runner who was found dead in Scottsdale on Monday.

Torrence, who was born in Japan and grew up in California, became a standout runner at Cal-Berkeley, and parlayed that into a successful pro career competing both for the U.S. and then Peru.

His mother … is Point Dume real estate agent and Rotary Club president Bianca Torrence.

Although the emergency call went out as a drowning, it will be up to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine exactly how Torrence died.

Torrence went to Loyola High School in Los angeles … then U C Berkeley.

USA Track & Field has called his death devastating news.

Gabriele Grunewald … a chmpion runner … says … quote …

“I am absolutely broken hearing about David Torrence. One of the best humans I’ve ever met, I will miss him deeply.”

Torrence was the 2009 U.S. indoor champion in the 3,000-meter, and later went on to a record-breaking 2014 season.

Torrence set a new U.S. indoor record in the 1,000-meter … he ran 5 eights of a mile in 2 minutes and 16.8 seconds … a record still stands.

The Peruvian Olympic Committee approached Torrence about switching nationalities.

His mother was born in Peru and he had dual citizenship, competed for Peru in the 5,000-meter at the Olympic Games Rio 2016 and finished 15th.

No funeral services have been announced.

35 local restaurants and other food establishments in Malibu have made the City of Malibu’s list of Clean Bay Certified restaurants this year.

The program recognizes food establishments that integrate ocean-pollution prevention techniques into their business practices.

Tis is things like preventing polluted runoff to storm drains … maintaining a recycling program …  and keeping the property trash-free,.

This year’s results show that 58 percent of the food service establishments in Malibu are meeting 100 percent of the Clean Bay Certified … and that’s stellar … says the city’s environmental systems coordinator … Casey Zweig.

CASEY ZWEIG :15 QQQ:

”it’s incredibly rare for me to see any pollution going into a storm drain while I’m doing these site visits.

“That in itself is an accomplishment for the City of Malibu.

“So our restaurants know that  they’re nopt allowed to dump anything outside … and they are training their staff.” [END QUOTE]

The program is largely voluntary … but the city is also enforcing some rules to protect the ocean.

Restaurants in Malibu are required to have two water conservation measures in place, use less toxic products for outdoor cleaning, serve water only when requested, have a spill cleanup kit onsite, and to meet two of 12 “Clean Bay Options.”

58 percent of malibu’s restaurants are meeting all 12 of those Clean Bay Options.

The list of the restaurants is at the City of Malibu’s web site.
