Proper respect

It’s been several weeks since the high school graduation but something has been eating at me since that day. Being a veteran and having spent many years overseas, I am happy to pay my due respects whenever I hear the National Anthem. If in uniform, I salute for the duration of the song. If in civilian clothes, I remove my hat and place my right hand over my heart. Imagine my surprise when I looked out over the crowd at the graduation and realized how few properly honor our anthem!

I was quite upset by that lack of respect, made even more so when I saw all the flags waving at the Point Dume 4th of July parade. Is it only acceptable to show respect to the flag and anthem if a BBQ party is involved? This is the example we have set for our children. When people cease caring about governance and feel entitled, look around. What kind of example have you set?
