Dummy steals dummy

Apparently, some have not heeded St. Aidan’s rector Susan Klein’s call for residents to bring out the best in themselves this holiday season.

A Point Dume resident reported Thursday that someone had stolen a mannequin on Zumirez Road early last week.

The mannequin in question held a sign that asked people to slow down when driving on the street.

“Basically, it’s our kids’ icon,” said Randy Holland, who reported the theft of the mannequin to local papers, hoping the guilty party will feel guilty and return it.

“It’s the protector of the street.”

The poor dummy was unbolted from a 4-foot by 4-foot cement block base and then ripped from one arm that was left as evidence of the crime, with the sign still attached to a reflector sign pole.

“The mannequin has sort of a saga,” said Holland, explaining that, in addition to having been stolen before, the dummy has been karate-chopped into several pieces.

“I found out who did it,” he said. “They ended up paying me for it.”

“Sally Safety replaced Suzy Safety,” said Holland of the now missing Sally.

“Now I don’t know where it is,” he said, “[Probably] in some teenager’s bedroom, in its rain gear.”

In its rain gear?

“We changed the attire [of the mannequin] per season,” explained Holland. “In the summer it had a Hawaiian motif, then tennis gear, and for winter, full-fledged rain gear with a yellow raincoat.”

Holland said he hopes that by having this story published, parents might see a mannequin in their teenager’s bedroom and make them return it.

Holland said many people know of the mannequin and have remarked on its disappearance.
