The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors last week honored Malibu resident and World War II veteran Leon Cooper for his efforts in urging the federal government to recover and repatriate the remains of hundreds of Americans who died during battle on the Tarawa atoll. Cooper is asking that the resolution and call for action be delivered to President Obama and other federal officials.
“Our government has done nothing since 1943 to recover and repatriate these brave Americans who gave their lives in defense of our freedom,” Cooper said in a press release.
Cooper is a World War II veteran of “Bloody Tarawa” and of five other major Pacific war battles, and a published author. He is also being recognized for his efforts to preserve Tarawa and to honor the sacrifices made by others in arms.
