Santa Monica school board members tell Malibu … no … you can’t have your own school district after all.
Malibu’s mayor shouts at a school board member … that she’s a liar.
Then things got ugly.
Malibu parents are seething … after the Santa Monica school board goes back on its word.
This is Malibu’s only local daily news.
It’s the (((( Wednesday ))) edition of the news … from Radio Malibu …. 97 point 5 K B U.

Santa Monica Board Members Find Way to Oppose Malibu District
Santa Monica school board members have gone back on their promises … and decided not to let Malibu have local control of its schools after all.
Instead … the school board members from Santa Monica have offered to let Malibu have some sort of limited autonomy … after admitting that past school superintendents never even had regular office hours out in its distant tax colony … of Malibu.
The Monday night meeting has left school parents and the city council furious.
One school board member said Malibu does not deserve a deal with Santa Monica … because the Malibu city council has already gone ahead to file separate divorce papers with the county.
That despite protests from Malibu … that the school board members had told Malibu to do exactly that.
Maria Leon-Vazquez had switched positions … and that prompted furious shouts from Malibu city council members in the audience.
Quote.
“Why are you lying?” Mayor Skylar Peak shouted to Leon-Vazquez.
Councilwoman Laura Rosenthal was on the negotiation committee … and she and her fellow negotiators from both cities had found a way for Malibu to get independence.
That would be by paying Santa Monica for nearly all the money it would lose from the tax rich property tax rolls of Malibu.
NEWSCART 77262 ROSENTHAL :23 QQQ AND WE FOUND A WAY.
“You said when you gave us that task, you wrote that `we believe in two separate school districts, and go forth and find a way to make that happen financially.’
“But you all agreed: you believe in two separate school districts.
“We went out and we found a way.” [END QUOTE]
The school board did not believe its own committee … so it hired a consulting team to examine the committee’s financial study that showed how Malibu could pay Santa Monica for separation.
The consultants agreed with the committee’s findings.
Not good enough for the school board.
Monday night .. parent after parent blasted the school board Monday … for running Malibu schools into the ground.
Karen Farrer noted the vastly inferior choice of language classes at Malibu High compared to Santa Monica high.
NEWSCART 77262 FARRER :23 QQQ: AND TAKES FOR GRANTED.
“Malibu is not asking for anything unusual.
“Just local control of the schools in our community.
“Something that Santa Monica has always had, and takes for granted.” [END QUOTE]
Board members from Santa Monica said the plan for Malibu taxpayers to continue to subsidize Santa Monica students … as a price to give Malibu a separate school district … did not last long enough.
Some board members expressed the desire to have a longer time period for monetary payments from Malibu to Santa Monica … than either of the reports called for … perhaps 50 years or longer.
School board member Richard Tahvildarian-Jesswein ticked off programs that exist at Santa Monica High … but programs that are not offered at Malibu High.
He said separation would cut the flow of money … from Malibu to SaMo High.… that supports r those programs.
NEWSCART 04308 RICHARD TJ 222 :23 QQQ: MONEY MATTERS.
“Money -is- the issue because we can’t have out baccalaureate program, we can’t have our performing arts high school, we can’t expand project-based learning, we can’t do these things these without money.
“We can’t.
“We ‘re not going to be able to continue … I think someone said … raises and thinking about our contributions to pension plans and providing partnership health care to our employees.
“Money matters.” [END QUOTE]
Other school board members said Malibu’s lack of representation on the school board … is … quote … “not a civil rights matter.”
That despite the fact that Malibu is dominated by an 86 percent majority Santa Monica population.
The school board instructed Superintendent Ben Drati to approach the major Malibu stakeholders to form some sort of limited autonomy arrangement for Malibu … to stay within the Santa Monica district.
The superintendent will meet with AMPS … city council members and the P-T-A leaders to gauge community reaction to this vague autonomy plan.
The superintendent will report back at the Nov. 16th meeting.
If Malibu leaders balk at the semi-autonomous plan … whatever that is … the district might talk
turkey about payments form Malibu to Santa Monica … and how long those last.
The matter comes back for discussion on November 16th.

Property Crimes Up In Santa Monica
Santa Monica had more property crime than a dozen California cities of the same size.
The Santa Monica Lookout newspaper reports that Santa Monica has roughly 30 percent more property crimes than other small, well-off cities like Santa Barbara … and way above the crime rate of Compton.
Santa Monica has 43 property crimes per 1,000 residents — also had a higher property crime rate than similar Southern California city’s it often uses for comparisons.
The city’s 5.35 percent increase in such crime was driven mostly by reports of larceny/theft, the FBI data indicates.
And in terms of crime … what happens in Santa Monica often is reflected here in Malibu.
Free Flu/Hep A Shots at Malibu Library Thursday
Fee flu vaccines and hepatitis A shots will be offered tomorrow … at the Malibu Public Library from 10 a.m. to noon.
The vaccines are free to anyone who does not have health insurance or whose health care provider does not offer flu vaccines.
Flu vaccines are recommended for everyone six months and older … particularly for those with weakened immune systems or chronic health problems, or caregivers for kids, older adults or sick people.
The hepatitis A vaccine is particularly recommended for members of the homeless community,.
Sixteen people have died from Hep A in San Diego in a recent outbreak there.
421 hospitalizations.
City To Regulate Pot Deliveries
Well … if it’s legal … tax it.
The City of Malibu already has two medical marijuana dispensaries in the city.
And with marijuana essentially becoming legal on January 1 … for recreational use in California … Malibu is changing its pot regulations.
The planning commission next week will consider new rules … that would allow mobile delivery of cannabis for recreational purposes … to residences in Malibu.
Delivery vehicles would have to have secure lock boxes for the pot to be transported in.
The cars could not have signage on them identifying them as fun on wheels.
Delivery drivers would have to be 21 years old …
There is no word if the pot delivery services would be restricted from also delivering Doritos and Ding Dongs.
Another Cougar May Be Shacking Up In Laurel Canyon
Another mountain lion has been spotted in the Hollywood Hills …. this one not wearing a collar … meaning that famous mountain lion P-22 has a roommate from Malibu in Laurel Canyon.
That may be a small exaggeration … but it appears that another cougar has made it across the 405 Freeway … out of the Santa Monica Mountains and into the Hollywood Hills.
A picture of the cougar was snapped recently in Laurel Canyon.
It’s not clear from the photo if the cougar is a male or female … but it’s not wearing a collar so it can’t be P-22… the famous cougar who lives near the Hollywood sign.
Either this new cougar has moved there … or has been commuting to Laurel Canyon is search of a romane.
Insert punch line here.
