Athletic events will no longer take place at Naval Base Ventura County as a result of federal spending cuts that went into effect March 1, the Ventura County Star reports. The base hosted a variety of sporting events, including the popular Point Mugu Surf Contest, the Mud Run, the Admiral’s Cup Triathlon and the Wounded Warrior Half Marathon. These events brought about 11,000 people to the base, according to the Star. Similar types of athletic events were also discontinued at other bases in the Navy Region Southwest.
