Nobu Could Lose Operating Permit, 38% Too Many Seats – Parking Hog Targeted Near Pier – Another Malibu Divorce? SMMUSD Meeting Tonight

Nobu could get shut down by the city …. it’s running 38 percent more seats than it’s allowed.

Malibu takes general aim at businesses hogging parking on P C H … but there’s one specific offender.

And tonight the school board gets asked one question …. how do you spell    … D I V O R C E  ???

This is Malibu’s only local daily news.

It’s the   ((((  time  ))) edition of the (((  day ))) news … from Radio Malibu  …. 97 point 5 K B U.

Good morning Malibu!

One of Malibu’s most popular and glamorous restaurants is being recommended for closure.

Nobu .. the oceanfront magnet for celebrities and big spenders … may get its coastal use permit yanked by the city.

The problem … it’s illegally converted a patio to a seating area.

City staff says the restaurant’s square footage … septic system and parking lot can safely handle 222 patrons … the restaurant currently has 306 customer spots.

That’s 38 percent more customers than the restaurant had agreed to handle …. when it opened.

Also … valet parking cars are being stored across the street in a building garage that is supposed to be used by beach visitors …. not restaurant patrons.

Both violations are severe enough to yank Nobu’s coastal use permit …. city staff says.

Residents along Billionaire’s beach are also furious that Nobu employees park their cars on P C H all day … every day … further aggravating the chronic parking problem and also violating the city rules.

Nobu has repeatedly met with city staff … made promises … and failed to follow through … according to the city planning department.

Says the city … the property owner and tenant have failed to make substantial efforts to comply.

The report was issued over the weekend …. we are contacting Nobu management for a response.

The whole matter goes before the city planning commission next Monday.

It could vote to revoke the restaurant’s coastal use permit … which could shut down the immensely popular and famous business.

——

Next door …

Overnight parking restrictions may be implemented on P C H near the pier.

City staff is recommending that parking be restricted … with a 30 minute limit … between the hours of 2 and 4 in the morning.

The limit would be in effect for one block …. from the pier to the Malibu Beach Inn.

That’s the block used by one particular business …. for years … where P C H gas been turned into a kayak rental stand.

Both sides of the highway have been used by the Malibu Surf Shack as permanent kayak rentals.

It’s against the law to operate a business on a state highway.

But the owner of the Malibu Surf Shack gets around that …. by claiming he’s merely storing stuff on a vehicle … and conducting business inside his store.

Other businesses have complained about the two long vehicles …. which use parking at Malibu’s heaviest-demand beach and pier area.

The proposed overnight parking limits go to the planning commission …. next week.

——

Final plans for the proposed Malibu cemetery also go up for a planning commission vote next week.

We’ll have more on that … in a future newscast.

Sunday’s big fire …. just east of Malibu in Mandeville Canyon … shows the dangers that Malibu faces this summer.

A crew was clearing grass using a gasoline powered Weed whacker … when the muffler overheated.

That that caused that sparked a fire that moved so fast that one family had to run out of the house …. leaving food cooking on the stove.

It was a chaotic scene in the dead end canyon …. with hikers and residents rushing downhill and fire engines and other residents racing uphill to save property.

Traffic at Mandeville Canyon’s entrance … at Sunset Boulevard …. Quickly snarled into a mess.

The city of LA brought in every available helicopter …. And they kept the blaze from spreading up Mandeville Canyon to dirt Mulholland West of the 405.

The fire started in grass being cleared … and that highlights the particular danger in Malibu right now.

The summer brush clearance deadline is Thursday …. And crews are busy up and down the coast clearing thick weeds that are already toasted into incendiary fuel.

Only one thing on the school board agenda when it meets tonight in Malibu.

And that’s listening to the public over the terms of a divorce for the school district.

Back in the 1930s … the small one room schoolhouse in Decker Canyon was merged into the nearest School District Down the coast … in Santa Monica.

L-A Unified it Eventually built schools in between Santa Monica and Malibu … and Malibu grew into an appendage to Santa Monica.

Now … property tax revenue from the mansionization of Malibu Is heavily relied on for school children in Santa Monica.

No other school districts in California are run this way.

And the Malibu school separation movement says it needs a major show of force tonight … to emphasize how important local control is for Malibu.

At 6:45 Tuesday … the school board will meet at Malibu City Hall .

Malibu parents want local control … but the cost of the divorce needs to be worked out.

With that as the background … the Santa Monica board members will trek to Malibu to hear local opinions tonight.

That’s at 6:45 this evening … at Malibu City Hall.

The Malibu High School Shark Fund drive is still short of its budget for the year. The parents group says it needs $35,000 more to fully fund all the school programs at Malibu High.

All money donated to the Shark Fund stays right at the school – every dollar!

June 9th is the end of the school year … and that’s when budget decisions are made for next year.

The parents group hopes that each family will do what they can.
