Housing must go green

Since I am older and have the benefit of hindsight, my new motto is “no contempt before investigation.” As an environmental activist I have tried to make the connection between social justice and environmental protection. That is the main reason I am opposed to nuclear weapons, nuclear power and war. Because with nuclear power, nuclear weapons and war, people and the environment suffer for many generations.

Malibu and other cities in California have a shared moral, social, legal and economical imperative to at least try to find properties to fulfill the state’s objective to provide low and moderate housing. Malibu City needs to put on their web site the facts about what the California State Housing Law is and what is required of us so that we can decide if fighting that law and losing and then having a judge power to permit even greater density then what we were fighting.

The interesting thing I found out in my research was Ventura County has met their mandate for low and moderate housing with a project called WAV (Working Artists Ventura), a sustainable community that has 13 market-rate for sale spaces that offer ocean views and a hybrid car with the net proceeds from the sale of these units providing nearly $2 million in cross-subsidy to the affordable spaces. The entire community is designed and built to the highest standards of green building technology including recycled building materials, car sharing, water and energy conservation, renewable power from the sun and Earth Coat paint. LEED-designed buildings are healthier for the inhabitants and the environment, while conserving our precious natural resources.

Does your home meet these standards?
