Competitors test out their creations at OLM’s VEX Robotics Tournament.

Twenty teams from schools throughout California attended Our Lady of Malibu (OLM) School for its third annual VEX Robotics Tournament on Jan. 30.

Participants filled Sheridan Hall and the third- and fourth-grade classrooms, vying for awards and a chance to advance to the California State Championship competition this spring. Among the competition was last year’s VEX World Championship team from Crescent Elementary School in Anaheim, as well as three teams from OLM.

VEX tournaments are alliances in which teams partner up on the playing field to achieve the highest score possible. This format allowed competitors to meet and work with fellow students from across the state.

Awards were presented for excellence, teamwork, programming, driving skills, design and STEM research. OLM’s Malibu Mechanized team — composed of Collin Brath, Chase Freeman, Claude Mamber and Zirui (Rogers) Li — took fifth place in the teamwork category.
