Record-breaking packing party

Malibu residents, schools, businesses and city officials at a Packing Party for the Troops on Wednesday of last week donated numerous items to be shipped to U.S. military troops overseas.

More than 60 volunteers at the packing party, held at the Point Dume Clubhouse, helped fill a record-breaking 1,550 eight-ounce Ziplock bags with donated snacks, treats, toiletries, socks, DVDs, books and cards from local students, among other items, which were then placed into 31 boxes shipped to troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and North Africa.

The packing parties were started in 2005 by Dolphin Award-winner Cindy Linke, and have since received numerous responses of gratitude from the troops who have received them.

Jennifer Naylor provided a catered lunch and refreshments for the volunteers.
