Malibu High construction shifts into overdrive next week.

Good morning Malibu!

——

Power went off and on in much of Malibu this morning.

Check your electronics.

The L A county fire department got a report of a power pole fire … near Malibu Canyon Road at P C H.

The Southern California Edison company had served notice it would be repairing power lines on Malibu Canyon Road … between Pepperdine and the Hughes Research Lab … this morning.

The power company had plans to block one of two lanes …. but then told the city it would not need traffic control after all.

It is not known yet if there was a power outage this morning …. or if the power fluctuations were unrelated.

Last fall … 14 separate power pole fires broke out in one weekend … in Malibu.

Heavy fog apparently caused accumulated dirt to drain electricity into wooden supports.

Edison responded by restoring a maintenance program …. to wash off the power pole insulators … a regular procedure that had been discontinued.

Malibu High construction is about to go into high gear.

Workers will take two  days off … while graduation activities take place next week.

In two weeks … the entire front part of the school will be  fenced off.

And the familiar front of the school will be knocked down.

The contractors will be in a race against time …. to complete construction activities in the front driveways by the end of summer …. they hope to reopen the parking lots for student drop off and pickup use by next fall.

This summer … the track will be resurfaced.

Windows and doors will be replaced and every surface will be painted, carpeted or replaced in the music arts and woodshop buildings …. which are going to to be overhauled and salvaged.

This summer … all high school summer school activities will be moved over to Juan Cabrillo elementary school … as the high school becomes a giant construction zone.

Water rates in Malibu are likely to go up …. way up.

The wholesale price of water delivered to Malibu depends on the cost of water delivered 400 miles … over two mountain ranges … from the Sacramento River.

That river water flows through the Sacramento Delta to intake pumps … and the delat is in big trouble.

The levees are crumbling … the fish are endangered … and the Bay Area and Southern California risks having their pumps suck salt water if a levee crumbles ina  flood or earthquake.

Governoe Jerry Brown is pushing for a water tunnel … that would bring fresh water under the delta … prevent further damage to fish … and deliver water to farms … the bay Area … Soiuthern California … and malibu.

It wil be expensive … and you will hear that the Metropolitan Water District  … which serves Malibu … will have to decide whether to sign on to the governor’s tunnel system.

The City of Paris and the City of Los Angeles may make a deal over the Olympic games …. and there’s a Malibu angle.

L-A and Paris are both competing for the 20-24 games.

The Wall Street Journal has broken the story … that Paris and L-A will make a joint application to the International Olympic Committee.

Paris would get the 20-24 summer games … and L-A would get them in 20-28.

What’s the Malibu angle?

Santa Monica.

The L-A application includes building a temporary beach sand volleyball stadium …. next to the P C H at McClure Tunnel.

In 19-84 … the L-A Olympic games housed the athletes in an Olympic Village at U C L A.

We’ll keep you posted.
