Campfires? Forget about it

This week in South Lake Tahoe, a devastating wildfire burned out neighborhoods and destroyed over 250 homes. People who lost their homes and belongings were allowed to briefly return Friday to sift through the wreckage under the eyes of a police escort. Authorities determined that an illegal campfire had sparked the blaze.

I hope that this incident alerts our City Council and Joe Edmonson of the Mountain Conservancy about the danger of campfires, just in case they’re still thinking about it! Even if it’s illegal (cold camping), campers tend to want to build a fire. After all, it’s all part of the fun of camping out. We’re fortunate to already have State operated campsites, why take on the expense and legal responsibility of City run campgrounds, especially in areas like Charmlee Wilderness Park.
