Webster Elementary School students, families and staff recently collected gifts, cards and letters to mail to U.S. soldiers overseas.

Students, families and staff of Webster Elementary School recently completed their annual project to send holiday gifts, cards and letter to United States troops serving overseas. The school collaborated with local group “Operation Interdependence,” which collects donations from individuals and groups throughout Malibu.

Each student at the school wrote a card or letter to send to a U.S. soldier. The school community also donated items such as socks, toothpaste and candy, along with small gifts for the soldiers to give to children where they are stationed.

The annual project is designed to help teach Webster students they are part of a larger community and there are many things they can do to help others. In 2009, Webster was one of 11 schools in California to be recognized as a “California Service Learning Leader School.”

Those interested in helping pack the boxes of gifts for the troops are invited to attend the Troop Packing Party Jan. 24 at the Point Dume Clubhouse, 29500 Heathercliff Rd., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information call Cindy Linke at 310.457.4510.
