A black bear was struck and killed by a vehicle on the northbound 101 freeway at Lindero Canyon Boulevard in Westlake Village.
The incident took place at 10:20 p.m. on Monday.
Officials with the National Parks Service said it was extremely unusual for a black bear to be struck, let alone seen roaming, in the Santa Monica Mountains area. The area historically has no black bears.
The Santa Susana Mountains, which separate Simi Valley and the San Fernando Valley, have a notable black bear population.
