The Drew Child Development Center in South Central Los Angeles brought youths from the program out to Topanga Canyon State Park for the Children’s Wisdom Circle in Nature event Aug. 23. Docent Karin Benson and local Dianne Porchia treated children to a full day of hiking through the park, while teaching them about nature and healing.
Inner-city children ages six to 13 took part in a two-hour nature walk, as Benson educated the group on local wildlife. Benson also taught participants about Native American healing practices.
“Inspiring positive change happens best when one is inspired by nature,” event organizer Porchia said. “I use nature as healer, teacher and inspiration. This is why I always hold my retreats in and around natural settings like our beautiful Topanga Canyon, the beach, equestrian ranches or destination resorts that offer hiking, biking, healing waters and massage.”
