Five Malibu High school incoming seniors last week attended the 71st annual American Legion California Boys State leadership program in Sacramento. The students-Atticus Anderson, Charlie Westcott, Ari Anderson, Ryan Matthews and Seth Rubinroit-were chosen along with 950 others from throughout the state on the basis of scholarship, character, citizenship and leadership.

During the program, they learned how the American system of government works. They elected officials for mock city, county, and state governments, passed and enacted laws and enforced these laws through the appointment and electetion of officials.

When laws were broken, trials were held and Boys State “lawyers” handled the cases in Boys State Superior court, Courts of Appeal or the state Supreme Court.
