Nineteen Malibu High School journalism students in March attended Columbia University’s Scholastic Press Association’s 85th Annual Convention, a national gathering of student editors and faculty advisers to newspapers, yearbooks, magazines, video productions, and online media, in New York City. Costs for the trip were underwritten by the Optimist and Kiwanis clubs of Malibu and by an anonymous, private Malibu donor.
Last month, MHS journalism teacher Jennifer Miller and MHS journalism students Caroline Kaufman, Lauren Sanchez and Sam Shivara attended a weekly Optimist Club breakfast to recount their experience at the convention. The students said they believe that newspapers will survive if they concentrate more on local news and issues.
