An attic explosion in Malibu this week was caused by a marijuana oil extraction lab, authorities announced on Thursday.
A suspect involved with the lab told investigators the explosion likely was triggered by static electricity when a light switch in the attic was turned on.
Smoke was seen coming from a home in the 1250 block of Encinal Canyon Road on Tuesday evening when emergency responders were called to the scene. Fire and Sheriff’s officials arrived to find the home’s attic on fire and a 25-year-old male who sustained burns to his face and body. He was taken to a nearby hospital.
An initial report from arson investigators revealed that the man was “operating a butane honey oil extraction laboratory, where honey oil or hash oil is extracted from the cannabis plant,” a media statement said.
Authorities found more than 700 butane canisters at the house, which was badly damaged as a result of the fire. The Malibu explosion was one of three honey butane oil-related incidents officials reportedly responded to in a 12-hour span, the others occurring in Huntington Park and Glendale.
The suspect’s name was not released, but charges against him are pending.Â
