Longtime Malibu resident Lyle Slater, 78, of Harrodsburg, Ky., died Sept. 22 at UK Medical Center in Lexington, Ky.
Born June 4, 1936 in Medina, Ohio, Lyle was the son of the late Edwin and Katherine Foky Slater. As a small boy, he lived in Berea, Ohio, and attended Saint Adalbert’s Church. Later, Lyle moved to Strongsville, Ohio, where he attended Strongsville Elementary, Strongsville High School and Saint Joseph’s Church. In 1960, Shirley and Lyle were married at Saint Joseph’s Church and then moved to Malibu, where they lived for 45 years.
Lyle was a firefighter with the Beverly Hills Fire department for 30 years, a member of the California State Firefighters’ Association and recently authored a book, “Divine Thump,” chronicling his experience serving as a firefighter.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Green Slater; daughter, Sierra Suzanne Jeanette Mittleman of Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.; son, Marc Edwin Slater of Crockett, Calif.; brother, Richard Slater of Medina, Ohio; grandchildren, Alexander and Lila Mittleman.
A visitation took place Sept. 29 in Strongsville. The funeral mass took place Sept. 30 at St. Adalbert Catholic Church in Berea. Burial will follow a separate service at the Santa Barbara Cemetery Chapel in Santa Barbara, Calif., on Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. with a celebration of life to follow.
