Give dolphins their space

My husband and I were at Malibu Beach Sunday, June 4, watching dolphins romping about for about ten minutes in one particular area about 150 feet offshore, and then to our horror we noticed two jet skis, a bright yellow one and a bright red one, each with a guy in a full wetsuit driving directly to the dolphins to watch them close up.

They got right next to the dolphins and didn’t turn their engines off to be silent for the animals’ wellbeing, but stayed right there with them, and when the dolphins immediately swam away, the jet skiers pursued them and roared around them there, too. This pursuing of the ever-fleeing dolphins continued for about 10 minutes, and it was quite sickening.

I couldn’t take it any longer. We left for Surfrider Beach, and told a lifeguard there, but with the huge crowds last Sunday, the lifeguard apologized saying all the lifeguards were so busy there he could not notify anyone, not even Malibu’s lifeguard boat.

I didn’t know what else to do except write a letter to you. It is our understanding that jet skis are not allowed off Malibu Beach, and that interfering with wildlife is illegal also. Any help from anyone is greatly appreciated.
