I am responding to Lois Lyon’s letter regarding the lack of a traffic signal at Corral Canyon. Lois, it is apparent from your letter that you are deeply frustrated, so I wanted to respond. The good news is we are getting a traffic signal at Corral Canyon. In March, 2004, a few of us took the issue before our City Council. Recognizing the problem, then Mayor Kearsley and council members agreed to support us in our quest for a signal. The response and team effort that followed both from inside and outside of our community were remarkable.
The Malibu Times covered the story. Those at the Union 76 station at Corral Canyon who had witnessed years of accidents graciously agreed to help gather signatures on a petition asking for a signal. Within a few weeks, 327 of your Malibu neighbors had signed the petition or had helped to get signatures. It was then presented to the City Council. From there things seemed to snowball.
Sen. Sheila Kuehl and Assemblymember Fran Pavley’s offices joined in to help facilitate meeting with Caltrans. NBC News showed up to do a story. Our city manager and staff did a fantastic job negotiating with Caltrans. Our City Council agreed to pay for a portion of it and on Feb. 14 of this year, we got a commitment for the traffic signal.
I cannot tell you how proud I am to be a member of this wonderful, caring community and I am deeply grateful to everyone who cared enough about the problem to do something about it, including Sameer from Caltrans. I hope the knowledge that a signal is on its way will help to ease some of your frustration.
