[Update: 10:14 a.m.:] One lane of traffic was open in each direction on Pacific Coast Highway at Big Rock in Malibu Monday, following a two-hour full closure of the highway.
Pacific Coast Highway was shut down in both directions at Big Rock Monday morning due to a vehicle striking a power pole. Traffic was being turned around in both directions, with no way to re-direct vehicles around the closure.
The collision took place at 8:10 a.m. Monday, when a vehicle crashed into a pole near the intersection of Big Rock and PCH.
As of 9:35 a.m., Southern California Edison crews were on scene, though the complete closure was expected to last “several hours.”
“Edison is on scene, they’re starting their repairs, and while they’re conducting their repairs, PCH will remain closed,” Lieutenant Minster, Watch Commander at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station, said in a phone interview Monday. “As soon as they remove that car, the pole’s coming down—it’s just barely being held up there by the car.”
The driver of the vehicle was transported to a nearby medical center “as a precaution,” Minster said.
California Highway Patrol was on scene to help sheriff’s officials redirect traffic safely around the closure.
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated PCH was fully reopened. The highway is still being fully cleared.
