Malibu surfers win big at Gathering of the Tribes

Coalition Surf Teams gathered at Church Beach in San Onofre to compete in the Gathering of the Tribes Jan. 7-8. Malibu surf clubs made a strong showing at the event, taking home a plethora of impressive awards.

Malibu Boardriders Club rider Frankie Seely, 14, earned first place in the Women’s Shortboard competition and second place in the Girls Longboard category.

Mary Schwinn of the Malibu Boardriders Club took first in the Grand Masters division for women 50 and up.

Boardriders Club president John Welsh earned second in the Club Presidents division. Sean Woods, 12, placed fourth in the Men’s 49 and under category while John Schaar, 14, came in sixth in the Boys Longboard competition. Both are members of the Malibu Boardriders Club.

The Malibu Surfing Association’s Taylor Nelson placed sixth in the Women’s Longboard event.

Last but not least, George Carr, 82, of the MSA, earned second place in the Extreme Legends Longboard Division.
