As for the count so far … it was a stunning defeat for former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa …as Democrat Gavin Newsom and Republican John Cox win the top two spots to face off in the California gubernatorial race.

Surprising vote tally for the LA County Sheriff race … as you know … the person elected as sheriff countywide serves as the Malibu police chief.
Incumbent Sheriff Jim McDonnell failed to get more than half the vote … as his two opponents combined for a 53% plurality.
McDonnell with 47% of the vote… will face challenger Alex Villanueva this fall.
Villanueva is a Sheriff’s Lieutenant running on a reform platform.
He captured 33% of the vote last night.

Developer Norm Haney is proposing to turn an abandoned gas station across the street from
Billionaires Beach into the front part of a hotel.
The 36 room hotel would actually be inside a repurposed office building to the north … up the hill.
The gas station … now painted green and used as a hand car wash and parking lot … would be torn down and the front of the hotel would be built there.
But Haney is running into trouble at City Hall.
It’s complicated …. but his plans appear to include keeping an office building appliction for the gas station site alive … while he draws up plas for the hotel on both sites.
Planning Commissioners said no.
The matters goes before the city council Monday.

The Hollywood reporter says a beachfront mansion near Paradise Cove is now on the market … for a jaw dropping 125 million dollars.

The Cougar overpass in Calabasas is moving along.
Environmental assessment has been finished and is available for public comment on the project.
The bridge would cost a little bit more than $60 million.
It would span over the 101 freeway just west of liberty Canyon Road in Calabasas.
It would link wild Parkland both to the north and south.
And it would provide what biologists say is a critical link for wild animals … most especially wild cougars … to enter and leave the Santa Monica Mountains national recreation area.
Next Monday … the National Park Service will host an informal open house about the wildlife crossing.
Agencies like the NPS .. Caltrans, the National Park Service (NPS), the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains, and the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority will be there to talk about the bridge.
The open house is between 4 to 7 pm at the King Gillette Ranch Visitor Center … on Mulholland Highway just east of Las Virgenes Malibu Canyon Road.
