The annual Nautica Malibu Triathlon hit Zuma Beach again this weekend, as thousands of fitness-minded folks biked, swam and ran to raise funds for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’ Pediatric Cancer Research Program.
The triathlon, sponsored by Equinox, was divided into two races, with the Classic Distance Race consisting of a half-mile swim, 18-mile bike ride and four-mile run. The Herbalife International Distance Race was for the true Iron Man: about a mile swim, nearly 24 miles on the bike, followed by a 6.21-mile run.
Among those present were several celebrities, including actors such as Malibu resident Jon Cryer (“Two and a Half Men”), James Marsden, (“X-Men: The Last Stand”) and Jeremy Sisto (“Six Feet Under”), while rock musician and reality television personality Brett Michaels provided musical entertainment.
The first Nautica Malibu Triathlon was inaugurated in 1987 by Michael Epstein of Michael Epstein Sports Productions, Inc, who is an avid triathlete himself. The inaugural event, pulled together by friends and family of Epstein, hosted 300 athletes, a fraction of the 5,500 who compete today. The top five athletes in each age division are awarded medals and kudos at the awards ceremony.
