Interested in becoming a certified lifeguard? The American Red Cross will be offering a five-class pool lifeguard certification course from April 19-28 at the Malibu Community Pool, according to a city release.
The course is open to all participants 15 years old and older who pre-register by Wednesday, April 17. The course will be limited to a maximum of 10 students and has to meet a required minimum of 4, said the release.
Students will be required to purchase a CPR mask and a lifeguarding book available at http://www.shopsstaywell.com before the first day of the course.
The course will include instruction through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, said the American Red Cross. Course topics to include:
– Injury prevention and facility safety
– Patron surveillance
– Injury prevention and facility safety
– Rescue skills
– Victim assessment
– First Aid
– CPR/AED
– Care for head, neck and spinal injuries
The registration fee for the course is $150. Students must also meet the physical requirements of being able to swim 300 yards continuously, retrieve a 10 lb. brink from 10 foot depth and tread water for more than 5 minutes, said a city official.
