Less than two weeks after the Springs Fire scorched 12,000 of 14,000 acres of Point Mugu State Park, photos from a helicopter flyover and a hike on the Chumash Trail show much of the blackened vegetation. Despite the damage, officials said some trails will reopen Tuesday.
Select trails on the western side of Point Mugu are scheduled to reopen after Point Mugu was evacuated and shut down during the Springs Fire, which burned 24,000 acres total in Ventura County.
The regions set to reopen include Rancho Sierra Vista in Newbury Park and  Sandstone Peak and Mishe Mokwa trailheads. Sycamore Canyon will remain closed but its overlook will be accessible at the Point Mugu State Park boundary with the canyon.
“Visitors are encouraged to help nature recover from the fire by respecting trail closures and staying on the trail in areas that are open. Foot and bike traffic tramples sensitive soil, vegetation, burrows and nests,” a statement from National Parks Service said.
