Hit and run nightmare brings neighborhood compassion

Lately, there has been a lot of controversy regarding Malibu’s emergency medical equipment. I had intended to write about the importance of preventive medicine and positive thinking, so we wouldn’t fall into thinking that the emergency equipment was all that was needed in an emergency.

Unfortunately, I had the horrid experience of being a pedestrian victim of a hit and run incident on Friday night/ Saturday, 12:15a.m., Sept. 18, 2004. This hit and run incident also involved my Great Dane who was hit and killed.

Although it was gratifying to know that the paramedics were on their way, the most comfort and help came from my neighbors. Usually I’m the one who helps others and it was wonderful to see how quickly others came to aid me.

A neighbor woman sat me down and put a warm jacket on my shoulders, a neighbor man held my arm up (which was broken) for nearly an hour while we waited for the paramedics. Another had a cell phone that worked and made the necessary emergency phone calls. A youth woke up his father and they both came to my aid. These men stayed with my Great Dane until the end. It’s wonderful to have had the help that I did. I can’t thank these people enough.

However, it’s very disappointing to have had to experience such a horrible event and this person just drove away after hitting my Great Dane and me.

My experience established the need not only for emergency equipment but more importantly—for human compassion and love. Thank you.

Don’t drink and drive!
