The board of education for the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District will be making a rare appearance in Malibu tonight when it convenes at Malibu City Hall at 5:30 p.m.

The board generally meets in Malibu every few months. It last met in Malibu Feb. 7.

Some highlights of tonight’s agenda:

No Malibu persons have applied for a position on the committee overseeing $385 million in bonds approved by Malibu and Santa Monica voters in November 2012 called Measure ES, a measure to improve and maintain district facilities. The bond measure is expected to add approximately $185 a year in property taxes to residents of Malibu.

The district has received 12 applicants for the seven member committee, none of whom are from Malibu. The board will hold a position for a Malibu person, but of course, first it must receive an application.

Committee members would serve terms of no more than three years, and no more than two consecutive terms.

-District staff is recommending the board approve a five percent increase in the cost of bus passes for regular education school bus routes, starting in the 2013/14 school year. Staff says the increase is due to increased transportation and fuel costs.

The current annual full cost for a bus pass for a single student is $600, while a student receiving assistance on a reduced fee schedule pays $231. Those numbers would jump to $630 and $243, respectively.

The item is on the consent calendar, which means it will be approved without discussion unless pulled by a member of the board. The public may also request that items on the consent calendar be pulled for discussion.
