Former Malibu resident Rebecca Greene, 17, traveled to Kampala, Uganda last month on a two-week mission with a group of Oaks Christian High School students and teachers.
The group spent each day at the God Cares School, where 680 students attend classes and 170 orphans reside.
The school’s goal is to give the children an education and a religious foundation.
The Oaks Christian group lead Sunday school classes, worked in the garden and enjoyed many activities with the Ugandan students. They also had a chance to travel to Lake Victoria, see the countryside and shop for local crafts.
Greene counts the trip as one of the best experiences of her life, saying the students and staff at God Cares School humbled her, and the trip also made her realize what a blessing each day and taught her to be joyous for all she has.
Greene attended Malibu United Methodist Preschool, Juan Carrillo Elementary School and Malibu High School. She recently moved with her family to Westlake.
Greene will graduate from Oaks Christian in the spring. She plans to study theology in college and possibly pursue missions work as a career.
