Two Malibu residents got top spots in the May 15 Crazy Coyote 25-mile Limited Distance endurance race.

Malibu Deer Creek Ranch owner and resident Carlos Siderman rode his horse, “Hustle Time,” to a first-place finish. His wife, Lisa, captured third place on her horse, “All The Money,” and also took home the coveted Best Condition award. In a sport historically dominated by Arabian stallions, it is worth noting that both winning horses are American Saddlebreds-a horse that has declined significantly since their widespread use in the American Civil War.

American Saddlebred horses were originally bred for covering long distances at a comfortable gait. General Lee and General Grant are some of the well-known Civil War military that rode Saddlebreds. Other notable Saddlebred horses, popularized on television, include Mr. Ed, Fury and one of the horses that played Black Beauty.
