A rare “blood moon” total lunar eclipse will occur late Monday night into early Tuesday, which should be visible from Malibu and the rest of Southern California.

The moon will apparently turn a bloody shade of red beginning at 10:58 p.m. on Monday, experts told the L.A. Times. A “bite” will slowly be taken out of the moon and eventually turn the entire surface red just after midnight. Sunsets and sunrises from around the rest of the world are said to be the cause of the red hue.

With clear skies forecast Monday night and no sunrise to interrupt the phenomenon, astronomers say this is the best opportunity Los Angeles has had to view a total eclipse in more than three years. Monday is also a prime chance to see the planet Mars shine brightly, according to experts.

Two more eclipses are predicted in the next year, one on Oct. 8 at 3:54 a.m. and another on April 4, 2015, at 5 a.m.
