Riley McMillin gets ready to take a cut Friday against Santa Paula.

Despite a late-inning rally from the opposition, the Malibu High Sharks varsity baseball team (9-0, 4-0) kept its perfect record alive Wednesday, beating Villanova Prep 4-3. The team’s nine straight wins marks the best start in school history.

The Sharks carried a 2-0 lead for much of the game and added two more runs in the top of the sixth to make it 4-0. But the Wildcats (1-3, 0-3) chipped away at the gap by scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning. And during the Wildcats’ final at-bat in the seventh, they tacked on one more run to make it 4-3. But the late rally wasn’t enough. The Sharks held onto the win as pitcher Riley McMillin dramatically recorded a strike out to end the game.

Next up for the Sharks are the Carpinteria Warriors (4-3, 3-0), who are tied with the Sharks for first place in the Frontier League. The Sharks play the Warriors for first place bragging rights on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Carpinteria.Â
