Local Boy Scout Organizes Malibu Ocean and Beach Clean-Up for His Eagle Scout Project
Focus on Helping the Local Marine Environment and Raising Awareness About Pollution

(Free-Press-Release.com) Apr 29, 2013 — Los Angeles, CA – With Earth Day on April 22, 2013, a local boy scout and members of his local troop will be in the final stages of preparation for one scout’s eagle service project – removing trash and debris from our ocean and beach.
Inspired by his love of the ocean and leveraging his SCUBA skills, a Calabasas youth, Brandon Solursh will be conducting an ocean and beach clean-up on the morning of May 4, 2013 at Surfrider beach in Malibu, California. On the afternoon of April 21, 2013 Solursh and his fellow SCUBA diving scouts will be meeting at Malibu Divers and then go to the swimming pool at Pacific Palisades High School to review and practice their dive techniques.
Brandon Solursh, a freshman at Calabasas High, has been an active scuba diver since 2010. While atCamp Emerald Bay, he earned his scuba merit badge and his Advanced Open Water dive training, and is now a Rescue Diver. He brought his idea for his Eagle Scout project to the owners of Malibu Divers, Carter Crary and Barbara Gentile-Crary. In consultation, and approval with Brian Compton, his Scout Master, he decided that he would focus on helping the local environment and Heal the Baywould be his non-profit partner. His fellow scouts and adult leaders who are certified SCUBA divers will participate in the underwater cleanup. Non-divers and other fellow scouts will participate in a beach cleanup at the same time.
Eagle Scout Service Projects are the opportunity for a Boy Scout to demonstrate leadership while performing a project for the benefit of his community. This is the culmination of the candidate’s leadership training, and it requires a significant effort on his part. The project must benefit an organization other than the Boy Scouts of America. Leadership must be demonstrated by the responsibilities of planning, managing and giving direction to those recruited to assist. According toMichael S. Malone of the Wall Street Journal, only about four percent of Boy Scouts ultimately earn the Eagle Scout rank. An Eagle candidate must follow his project from conception to completion, documenting and providing evidence of demonstrated leadership. As the overall project director, the Scout has full responsibility to assure it is completed satisfactorily. He must define any associated costs and explain how the funds will be raised. He must develop a detailed plan for providing the resources, human and material, required to accomplish the project.
“I know of no other youth organization that consistently does more to help youth develop leadership, responsibility, and community engagement than scouting. I have seen the benefits of scouting first hand at our SCUBA programs at Camp Emerald Bay and now, supporting Brandon’s eagle scout project”, said Barbara Gentile-Crary, owner of Malibu Divers. Malibu Divers will be providing the scuba gear, conducting pre-event scuba tune-ups for the divers, and PADI Divemasters who will provide underwater supervision.
